Born from a mysterious light captured in a photograph.

Everything began with a single photograph taken by KOROMO’s founder.

When the film was developed, it revealed countless small white spheres of light—Tamayura, also known as orbs—floating throughout the image as though they had filled the entire frame.

Unable to forget this mysterious experience, the idea remained with him for many years before finally taking shape as this limited-edition Indigo Aloha Shirt.

The design depicts five dreamlike landscapes where Tamayura are said to appear:

・Deep forests
・Mountain valleys
・High mountains and mist-covered meadows
・Ancient graveyards and battlefields
・Sacred shrines and temples



Each scene drifts gently through a world of deep indigo, creating a garment that feels as though you’ve stepped into a story.

「Indigo Batik-Dyed Goldfish Shirt」

A single goldfish, originally painted by KOROMO’s founder, has appeared in several collections over the years.

For this special edition, we collaborated with a dye artisan in Wakayama, using the traditional roketsu-zome (Japanese wax-resist dyeing) technique.

As the wax naturally cracks during the dyeing process, the indigo seeps into those fine lines, creating beautifully unpredictable patterns that cannot be reproduced by machine.

While conventional printing strives for perfect consistency, KOROMO has always embraced the expressive beauty of handcraft—the subtle brushstrokes, irregular lines, and painterly character reminiscent of traditional Japanese art.

The random crackle created by the wax-resist technique gives the goldfish an almost living presence, adding rhythm, movement, and remarkable depth to every shirt.

As an indigo garment, it will continue to develop its own character with wear, becoming even more beautiful over time.

We hope you’ll make it part of your wardrobe for many summers to come.

Tamayura

Even in an age where science has advanced enough to explain so much of our world, there are still a few phenomena that seem to transcend logic—moments that feel like messages from the spiritual realm.

In the ancient Japanese language, the tiny spheres of light that gently drift through the air, invisible to the naked eye, are called Tamayura.

Often referred to today as orbs, their appearance may be explained scientifically. Yet many believe that the unseen force guiding them is the presence of spirits.

This is an experience I had many years ago.

During an event at Daikaku-ji Temple in Sagano, I was photographing the lights reflected across Osawa Pond after night had fallen. After taking several pictures, I was suddenly overwhelmed by an intense flash of light—so brilliant that I instinctively closed my eyes.

It lasted only an instant.

A fragile, fleeting radiance, almost like a vision. I have no doubt that I truly saw it, yet when I opened my eyes, the night remained unchanged.

Even now, after all these years, I have never forgotten that single moment.

They say Tamayura often appear in deep forests and secluded valleys, on misty mountain meadows, in cemeteries and ancient battlefields, and in the sacred atmosphere surrounding shrines and temples.

Each place carries its own unique vision of Tamayura.

In this work, tranquil natural landscapes emerge from deep indigo through the art of discharge dyeing, while shimmering Tamayura drift gently through the scene.


Bringing this quiet presence to life is the hand-guided embroidery of our artisan, who patiently stitches each yokai one thread at a time.

This is a work I have long dreamed of creating.

I hope it leaves a gentle, lingering impression in your heart.

With a single, confident brushstroke, KOROMO’s artisan paints a circle in one continuous motion.

Layer upon layer of hand-painted aqua-blue circles captures a fleeting moment of pure, flowing water upon the fabric.

The goldfish swimming through the rippling water evoke the arrival of summer, bringing an even greater sense of freshness and tranquility to the piece.

Each shirt is individually hand-painted by the artisan, making every piece truly one of a kind.

The beauty of Roketsu dyeing lies in the craftsmanship of the artisan and the unexpected patterns created by the natural cracking of wax.

This exclusive piece is a collaboration between KOROMO and a dye studio in Wakayama, renowned for its indigo dyeing techniques.

How are the distinctive crackled patterns and subtle textures of Roketsu dyeing created?

As a preview, we’d like to take you through the process.

① Drawing with Hot Wax
Wax heated to nearly 100°C is carefully applied by hand with a brush, following the original design directly onto the fabric.

② Creating the Cracks
Once the wax has cooled and hardened, it is gently cracked by hand.
The artisan carefully controls the hardness of the wax, the temperature, and the natural cracking that will occur during dyeing. This is the most important step in the Roketsu dyeing process.

③ Indigo Dyeing
The shirts are immersed in an indigo dye bath.
To ensure an even finish, each shirt is continuously moved by hand so the fabric does not overlap and create unwanted unevenness.

④ Washing & Drying
After dyeing, the remaining wax and excess dye are thoroughly washed away.
The shirts are then hung to dry naturally, completing the process.

Unlike smooth embroidery or printed designs, Roketsu dyeing creates a finish with a bold, organic character and a unique sense of depth.
